Natural Disaster Preparedness

natural disaster preparedness to survive emergency situationsWhat many people fail to realize is that it doesn’t matter where you are located in the world, you are at risk of a natural disaster occurring. I admit, in some locations the risk is slightly higher. However, even if you live in a ‘low risk area’ you do need to be prepared for the worst. If you aren’t, then you are putting your own life in danger.

Let me talk to you a little about natural disaster preparedness.

Firstly, what is preparation for a natural disaster? Well, basically you are going to be considering the various disasters that can occur in your area, and what sort of problems they can cause. After all, flooding is going to be a completely different situation to an earthquake or a volcanic eruption.

You will then be preparing to deal with anything these will throw your way. Let’s take a look.

Plan Your Survival Food

At the heart of all natural disaster preparedness is considering whether you have enough food to see you through the disaster. Many people don’t. There are far too many people out there who believe that their government will help them in their time of need.

A change of perception is needed here, as it is unlikely that the government will always be able to help them out! This may be due to the authorities not having the resources or not being able to reach those in need quickly enough.

Prepare Well in Advance

Food preparation should take place well in advance. Many people wait until a disaster warning goes out. If you do that then you are putting your life and your family at risk. This is because food will disappear off the shelves within hours of that disaster warning, leaving you with nothing.

Therefore you will want to ensure that you always have a good stash of food should the worst happen. Budget for at least a couple of weeks. Ideally, you should opt for food that has long expiration dates. Don’t forget to grab yourself some water bottles to keep you hydrated too!

No Cell Phone Reception or Electricity

In most disasters, it is likely that both mobile phone towers and electrical lines are going to be knocked out. This downtime is could be just for a short period, but may also be for days, weeks or even longer. Obviously having no power or phone coverage will be a major problem for many people. This is why it is essential that during your natural disaster preparedness you look at ways to overcome this problem even before it occurs!

Buy a Power Generator

I suggest purchasing a power generator. Yes, these are often expensive, but they may well save your life. After the natural disaster occurs it is important that you ration the use of your generator to ensure that you do not run out of fuel during this difficult period. But by having a generator already before a crisis means that you know you will have electricity to operate essential items until the local supply is restored.

Develop Survival Skills

Finally, you are going to need to consider your overall health and well-being by learning some survival skills. This means brushing up on your medical skills (go beyond basic first aid here!), learning how to build a shelter, how to generate heat, how to purify water and much more! All of this could save both yours and your family’s life!

Sadly, this is just a brief overview on the various concepts that need to be considered when it comes to natural disaster preparedness. However, hopefully it has given you a good indication of the various things that you do need to bear in mind to ensure that you survive! You can always carry out additional research yourself through a good book or by reading additional articles on this website.

If you take anything away from this article then remember the importance of preparing before hand. Natural disaster preparedness could very well save your life or the life of someone you love. So sit down today and begin your survival plan.
